Hi, I'm Helen Stewart
(I'm the one with the grey hair. The redhead is Sindy.)I'm a knitting pattern designer and the founder of Curious Handmade.
Every year, I design a holiday mystery collection called Knitvent. At this time of year, we tend to spend a lot of time creating holiday magic for other people. That is a beautiful thing, but I thought big-hearted knitters deserved a little extra surprise and delight for themselves. Especially during the gift-knitting season. That was the origin of Knitvent. When you think about it, knitting and advent calendars are really a perfect pairing. Secretly stitching handmade presents and stashing them away. Counting down to the big event as the excitement builds. Both have a special way of sparking the holiday spirit. It's all about anticipation.Every new Knitvent has a theme that inspires the designs. This time, it's all about holiday treats. I always want the Knitvent patterns to feel like indulgent little treats arriving to your inbox, so it feels very fitting.I hope you'll consider treating yourself to Knitvent this year. But no matter what, I hope you remember to take some time out to feed your creative heart this holiday season. You deserve it.Happy knitting!Helen x
The Sweetness of the Season
Indulgence, food and feasting have always been at the heart of the holidays. and the Knitvent 2023 designs are inspired by some of my own favourite seasonal treats.
The Knitvent Beginner's Guide
Diving into something brand new and mysterious takes some courage, so (without spoiling any of the surprises) I thought I'd demystify Kntivent just a little bit.Since we launched the first Knitvent collection back in 2013, I've gotten lots of questions about the secret nature of the patterns, how to take part, and what to expect. You can check out all the previous Knitvents in this Curious Handmade blog post to see what past collections have looked like. And every year brings a new question or two, so I've collected answers to the most common questions for you right here:
How do I join Knitvent?
There's no sign up, just purchase the Knitvent 2023 Collection and you're officially in! If you're a member of Ravelry, join us for chat and knitalong threads in the Curious Handmade Ravelry Group. There will also be lots of inspiration on the #Knitvent2023 hashtag on Instagram. You can join in the social aspect of Knitvent as much or as little as you like. The community is so warm, encouraging, and fun, and you'll be very welcome.
How much does Knitvent cost?
Until October 26th when the first pattern drops, the Early Bird price for Knitvent 2023 is £10.75, which is more than 40% off the regular price. After the Early Bird closes, the price goes up to £18.00. You don't need a code for the special, the discount is already applied. (NOTE: Gumroad uses real-time exchange rates to convert purchases to USD for processing. Also, these prices do not include any VAT applicable in your country, so the price you see displayed at checkout may be different)
Is the price for the whole collection?
The price includes the whole collection!
How many patterns are included?
There are six patterns in the Knitvent 2023 collection.
When will the first pattern be available?
The first pattern comes out Thursday, October 26th. I'll release either one or two new patterns each week until Thursday, November 23rd.
How will I get access to the new patterns?
From October 26th, 2023, every Thursday an email with a link to the newly released pattern or patterns will be automatically sent to you.
How will I know what yarn I'll need?
I've designed many of the patterns as stash-busters, so there's a chance you already have something that will work! I've shared a list of all the sample yarns, quantities, needles, and notions for the Knitvent 2023 designs here, if you'd like to prepare ahead of the pattern releases.
What if I don't have a yarn advent calendar?
Don't worry! I design the "advent calendar" pattern to work with scraps from your stash, or with a couple of single skeins, or even all in one colour. We've had plenty of members do just that for previous "advent calendar" patterns, with lovely results.
Are we supposed to keep up with knitting a new pattern every week?
Knitvent is strictly a NO PRESSURE zone. I know we're all juggling a lot of competing priorities, especially at this time of year. While most of the patterns are designed to be gift knits, Knitvent is really more about giving yourself a little surprise each week to nurture your creativity and finding a little quiet time for yourself to knit whenever you can. It’s all about relaxing, having fun, and not taking the process of gift knitting too seriously.
I'm scared the patterns might be too advanced for me. What if I get stuck?
Please don't worry. The difficulty level of the collection is adventurous beginner to intermediate. That means that if you've got the basics of knitting down (knit, purl, knit two together, yarn over) and you're willing to try out unfamiliar stitches if and when they come up (and be patient with yourself while you're learning) you can absolutely do this!I've designed these patterns to look impressive while being simple and comforting to knit, whether you're brand new or not. If there's anything unusual in a pattern, I'll make sure to explain it thoroughly, and provide resources where I can. And remember, you're never on your own.
